The People of Ceará - History of Ceará in the Classroom. Colonial Ceará (From the arrival of the caravels to the Independence of Brazil) From 1500 to 1822, the Portuguese officially arrived in Brazil and marked what we know today as the Colonial Period. It was a time of battles between the Dutch, Portuguese and indigenous natives for control of the lands. Ceará witnessed the succession of economic cycles and incorporated this mixture of elements into its culture, which remains rooted in the people to this day.
