Every year, between 60 and 70 million tons of the world's most carotenoid-rich fruit ripen in Brazil, but only a tiny fraction is used by humans. The estimate is for the buriti, the fruit of a palm tree that is abundant in the Amazon and Cerrado, but is neglected by the food industry. The antioxidant properties of the buriti help prevent cancer and other diseases. Versatile, it can be eaten raw or transformed into flour, sweets and bread. Even so, the fruit is one of several food species native to Brazil that have been losing ground in homes, restaurants and markets at the same time that hunger is growing and food is becoming more expensive in the country. In this video, our reporter João Fellet talks about the reality of this and other highly nutritious plants that are wasted in Brazil. In common, many of them are considered superfoods because they have a large amount of nutrients – such as minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. Check it out.
