What is the origin of Christmas? Was Jesus Christ really born on December 25? What influence did Roman festivals such as Saturnalia have on the celebration of Christmas? Did you know that Father Christmas (or Santa Claus) was inspired by a real person? And what is the origin of the Three Wise Men? What does the Bible say about the birth of Jesus? In this documentary video in Spanish we tell you the stories that gave rise to Christmas. #christmas #history #documentary As you all know, this Christian holiday is celebrated in commemoration of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, son of Mary and Joseph, on December 25 more than two thousand years ago, in Bethlehem of Judea. But why that day in particular? Is there historical data to support that the man considered the son of God by Christians was really born on December 25? Many of you will be thinking: if for centuries there has been a perpetual debate between atheist scholars and theologians about the historical existence of Jesus Christ, whether he was a person of flesh and blood or a myth arising from the syncretism between cultures such as the Greek and Jewish, how are we going to know what day he was born? Many of you will assume that our first stop will be the year 1 after Christ. But even that is not clear, because many Bible scholars point out that his birth should be placed between the years 6 and 4 before Christ. Why? Because, according to chapter two, verse 1, of the Gospel of Matthew, the son of God was born “in the time of King Herod,” and the monarch died –and this is a historical fact– in the year 4 before our era. As you know, according to the Bible, Herod orchestrated the famous Massacre of the Innocents to kill all children under two years old after learning, through “some wise men from the East” –whom we know today as the Three Wise Men–, that the “king of the Jews” had just been born, for fear that he would usurp the throne. It is often believed that, rather than kings or magicians, those illustrious visitors were wise men instructed in astrology who had reached the child by reading the stars. The confusion about the year of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth is even greater if we take into account that in the Holy Scriptures, in the Gospel of Luke, it is said that the nativity of the Lord coincided with the census of all the inhabitants that, in the time of the Roman emperor Augustus, was carried out by Publius Sulpicius Quirinius in the Roman province of Syria, which at that time included Judea. Why does this fact complicate everything even more? Because it is known that Quirinius was governor of that province in the year 6 after Christ. In fact, according to scholars, it does not make much sense to think that Herod ordered the massacre of children that the Bible recounts, because a Jewish-Roman historian of that time, Flavius Josephus, did not mention this alleged massacre in his works 'The War of the Jews' and 'Jewish Antiquities', in which he speaks profusely about the life of Herod, and not precisely for the better - some consider him the main instigator of the black legend of this king. If we analyze it a little, it is an episode quite similar to the one we can read in Exodus 1 of the Old Testament, where it is explained that, at the time Moses was born, the Pharaoh had ordered the death of all male Hebrew babies born in his kingdom by throwing them into the river. Perhaps Matthew, in his gospel of the New Testament, intended to present the newborn Messiah as the new Moses. Thank you for visiting our channel.
