Pippin, who had felt like a burden to the Fellowship since they left Rivendell, found himself even more helpless in this situation, but he soon discovered that the internal differences between the orc factions offered an opportunity. The orcs who captured them belonged to three groups: Saruman's Uruk-Hai, the orcs of the Misty Mountains, and the orcs of Mordor. These groups, with their own cultures and loyalties, were in constant conflict, weakening their unity. Pippin, displaying unexpected bravery, used this chaos to his advantage. He managed to partially free himself from his bonds and left a brooch as a clue for the rest of the Company. He also tricked Grishnákh, a cunning orc of Mordor, by pretending to know the whereabouts of the One Ring. Merry, though also trapped, supported Pippin in his ruse. Amidst the confusion caused by the arrival of the Rohirrim, the hobbits eventually managed to escape.
