The Massangana Sugar Mill, located in Cabo de Santo Agostinho, a rural architectural complex from the 19th century, is the only sugar mill in Pernambuco to have an abolitionist leader linked to its history. The name of the mill, of African origin, comes from the Massangana River. During the sugar boom, the river was used to transport the products produced there and in the sugar mills in the region to the Port of Recife. In his book “My Formation”, Joaquim Nabuco states that the first impressions he had at the Massangana Sugar Mill formed the basis of his ideas, which would forever influence him in the fight for the abolition of slavery. “For my part, I believe I never went beyond the limits of my first four or five impressions… The first eight years of my life were, in a certain sense, those of my instinctive, or moral, definitive formation… I spent this initial period, so remote and so present, on a sugar mill in Pernambuco, my home province”.
