It was the second fortified residence in Brazil, preceded only by the old Duarte Coelho Castle in Pernambuco. #FAZENDA #CASTELOGARCIADAVILA #FAZENDAHISTORICA Built between 1551 and the 18th century on a hill, the Casa da Torre was originally named by its owner as Torre Singela de São Pedro, and is also referred to as Castelo de Garcia d'Ávila, Torre de Garcia d'Ávila and Forte de Garcia d'Ávila. The Casa da Torre has its origins in the initiative of Diogo Álvares Correia, Caramuru, married to Catarina Álvares, Paraguaçu, a Tupinambá baptized in France with the name Catarina do Brasil — the first Christian couple in the Brazilian colony. The descendants of both, through Diogo Álvares Dias, son of Genebra Álvares and Vicente Dias, a native of Beja, were intertwined not only in the progeny (Isabel de Ávila) of Garcia d'Ávila with the indigenous Francisca Rodrigues, but also in the generation of Jerônimo de Albuquerque with the daughter of the chief Arcoverde Muira Ubi, from the Captaincy of Pernambuco. Later, they were linked with the descendants of Domingos Pires de Carvalho, married to Maria da Silva; with the generation of Filippo Cavalcanti married to Catarina de Albuquerque (from Pernambuco); and with the descendants of the couple José Pires de Carvalho—Tereza Vasconcellos Cavalcanti de Albuquerque Deus-Dará, forming the framework of the aristocracy of the Recôncavo Baiano. The Casa da Torre was the embryo of a large estate that began in the captaincy of Bahia in the 16th century and that, over the course of 250 years, expanded over the generations of its lords for more than 400 leagues in the Northeast Region of Brazil — a territory that corresponded to twice the size of the captaincy of Piauí — at the cost of wars against the Indians, with the enslavement of the latter to work on the sugar cane plantations, in the sugar mills and in the breeding of oxen, horses and mules (all these animals were used for transport over short distances and as traction power in the mills). The expansion was also motivated by the search for silver mines, although only saltpeter mines were found.[2] It was the center of an expressive military power in the colonial period. From 1798 onwards, it was involved in the struggles for Brazilian Independence. Many of its members were awarded titles of nobility by both Pedro I of Brazil and Pedro II of Brazil.
