Artur and Gundula Hornung have given their foster daughter Birgit Hornung, who was orphaned eight years ago, a three-week trip to East Africa for her birthday and her high school graduation. Shortly before they are to take Birgit to the airport, Mr. Hornung receives a call from an employee of his investment advisory firm asking him to come to the office immediately. He orders a taxi for Birgit. Eight days later - just as a postcard from Birgit, stamped in Mombasa, arrives, the tour guide Magda Lorenz calls with bad news: Birgit has not returned from a trip to the beach. All that has been found is her sun hat. Considering the sharks swimming behind the reef, it is not surprising that her remains have not yet been found.
