About :

Too much workload, too little money and staff: The Corona pandemic is making it clear to everyone what has been a reality in hospitals for years. ZDFzoom wants to know: What can be done to combat the emergency? They pay bonuses and hire expensive leasing companies - hospitals are creative in times of need. And yet: Overwork is driving more and more nurses into "Pflexit". Health ministers have been promising relief for years - but have achieved little. Nurse Vanessa A. has given up: "Even if I had had 1,000 euros net more per month, that would not have changed my decision. We had fewer and fewer staff, but more and more patients came," she says. There is already a shortage of 50,000 nurses in German hospitals, and by 2030 there will be over 60,000. Health ministers have repeatedly declared nursing to be an important concern, wanted to "make the nursing profession more attractive", proclaimed the "Year of Nursing" and announced that they wanted to "initiate hospital reform". But politicians have not yet really got the problems under control. The municipal hospital association München Klinik is tackling this with bonus payments: employees who recruit new colleagues receive 4,000 euros. New employees receive the same amount. "In order to strengthen nursing in the long term, the clinic is also relying on training and further education opportunities. Intensive care nurse Markus Schopper, for example, appreciates this: "Nursing is lifelong learning." Over the years, he has worked his way up to deputy ward manager. For him, further education makes the job - despite all the problems - sustainably interesting and also gives him the chance to take a break from the stressful daily routine on the ward from time to time. Temporary employment agencies such as that run by Mike Schreier in Landau hire out nursing staff across Germany. "Actually, my professional ethics forbid companies like ours from even existing," says the trained intensive care and anesthesiologist nurse. But around half of all hospitals in Germany take advantage of such offers in view of the staff shortage. Because a different collective agreement applies here, employees can often earn significantly more, have fewer hours per week and significantly more freedom when it comes to scheduling shifts. And for hospitals, temporary work is still cheaper than closing beds and canceling operations.
