■ Current Affairs Planning Window - Elderly Refugees Our country is rapidly aging, and one in ten people is over 65 years old. After the Korean War, they struggled to build the economy and raise their children, but what awaits them are insufficient retirement funds, fraud, loneliness, and other factors that threaten the rest of their lives. The phenomenon of elderly refugees, which hit Japanese society hard, or elderly people having difficulty taking care of food, clothing, and shelter or living in isolation from society, is also occurring in our country. We will cover the reality of elderly refugees, who are becoming a new threat to Korean society, and find out measures to prevent them. ■ Retirement Fund Stealing According to a survey by the Korea Investor Protection Foundation in 2010, 27.9% of respondents said they had been or almost been a victim of financial fraud, and the largest number were in their 60s. So what is the reality? Contrary to expectations, most of the elderly victims of fraud that the reporting team met were from difficult circumstances. The scammers take the money that these elderly people have saved their entire lives and run away with it after using sweet talk. Most seniors live alone or do not have financial knowledge, so they are unable to properly cope and spend the rest of their lives having their retirement funds stolen. We will cover the reality of such fraud and similar acts targeting seniors. Institutional finance also steals seniors’ funds. The difference is that banks sell risky investment products after taking legal action in advance, and if there is a problem later, they hand over related documents so that only the seniors who invested suffer. We will cover the reality of the domestic financial sector’s incorrect sales of high-risk financial products targeting seniors and find out alternatives. ■ Retirement funds? It’s hard to live now. If you have money to invest, you’re lucky. Among seniors over 65 years old, 39% think they are prepared for retirement. The rest are not prepared at all. The only options for seniors without retirement funds are to work or receive support from the government or society. However, the things seniors can do are limited and they are living difficult lives in retirement due to insufficient social support. Why are there a shortage of jobs for seniors? We will look into the current jobs of the general elderly and take a look at their difficult lives. ■ Elderly poverty rate No. 1 in OECD Korea's elderly poverty rate (the percentage of elderly people with income below the median among all elderly people) is 45%, the highest by far among the 34 member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). It is twice that of Japan (22%), Greece (23%), and the United States (24%), and is 14 percentage points higher than Ireland (31%), which ranks second after Korea in elderly poverty rate. We will cover the reality of elderly poverty in Korea, which has the highest rate of elderly poverty among OECD countries. ■ Solitary deaths There are many elderly people who live alone in their old age or whose children are facing financial difficulties. The number of elderly people aged 65 or older living alone increased from 544,000 in 2000 to 1,021,000 (87.7% increase) in 2010, and it is expected to increase significantly to 2,334,000 in 2030. In this trend, the number of so-called 'lonely deaths', in which elderly people who have no one to care for them are discovered long after they die, is increasing every year. Which elderly people living alone are at risk? Through a fact-finding report, we will look into the process through which the elderly die alone and what our society is missing. ■ Japan, Shock and Response to Elderly Refugees Since loneliness and a society without relatives emerged as social issues in 2010, the government, local governments, and social organizations have jumped into solving the problems of loneliness, isolation, and social isolation among the elderly. However, loneliness continues to occur since then, shocking Japanese society. How is Japan dealing with loneliness?
