It is only 4.2 light-years away: and yet it seems almost inconceivable that we will ever reach Proxima b! This is all the more regrettable since this celestial body is not only the closest exoplanet to Earth, but is also suspected of being habitable! Given that we are not even able to conquer the planetary worlds that are on our doorstep, one might think that interstellar travel in general will forever remain an unfulfilled dream. But it does not have to be this way: Indeed, experts are currently working hard on developing new propulsion systems that will soon allow us to "jump to the stars" - and finally bring exoplanets like Proxima b within our reach! But what are the revolutionary concepts that are being discussed in this regard? How realistic is their implementation – and could Proxima b become our “interstellar springboard”?
