About :

Armel Le Cleac'h was the guest of Gilbert Dréan and Virginie Valentini in the Café de la Marine this Thursday at the Cité de la Voile Éric Tabarly. Winner of the 2016 Vendée Globe, the skipper from the Bay of Morlaix looked back on the exciting duel between Charlie Dalin and his pursuer Yoann Richomme. A mano a mano that recalls his magnificent confrontation with François Gabart in 2012/2013 then Alex Thomson four years later. In the shoes of the hunter then the hunted during these two editions, Armel knows perfectly well the pressure that a finish of such intensity represents and the feelings that animate the skippers a few days before the finish! Happy to be able to follow this exciting showdown without being at sea, he gave his take on the final scenario and a victory promised to the Macif skipper. While his record of 74 days should be reduced to just 65 days, Armel commented on the incredible evolution of the new foilers and analyzed the assets that allowed Charlie Dalin to regain the advantage in the South Atlantic. Admiring the performances of Sebastien Simon and Justine Mettraux who are having a remarkable race, he also highlighted the incredible maturity shown by the young Violette Dorange. Now skipper of the Maxi Banque Populaire XI with which he had an extremely busy 2024 season between the Arkea Ultim Challenge and the transport of the Olympic flame, Armel returned to his decision not to set off to attack the Jules Verne Trophy this winter. A particularly difficult trophy to win, as evidenced by the two failed attempts for the Trimaran SVR Lazartigue and Sodebo Ultim 3. While François Gabart and his crew are on standby for a 3rd attempt, Sodebo Voile had to give up for this year. Challenge man Armel fully intends to try his luck as a crew next year too, and is already planning for the 2nd edition of the Arkea Ultim challenge 2028. A solo round the world race in an Ultim that he hopes to win and on which he is nourishing the hope of beating François Gabart's 42-day record. A time he says is the ultimate record and his goal in the years to come. Until then, he will defend his title in the Transat Jacques Vabre 2025, a race that now bears the name TRANSAT CAFÉ L'OR
