Baalbeck - the name itself is a mystery. It comes from the Semitic deity Baal, the god of storms and rain, and was once a thriving religious center. Baalbeck is believed to have been inhabited for over 10,000 years. It was an important hub for trade and religion as early as the Bronze Age. But its true importance began with the Roman era, when the city became a monumental sanctuary for the gods.
