A revolutionary bus for its time, with a striking and influential design, was the GM PD 4501 SCENICRUISER, with a split-level floor, from the American Greyhound Lines. This bus was created for the largest land transport operator in the Americas, as a way to attract passengers, who were also being sought after by trains and planes, already in the 1950s, and even before. The GM PD 4501, the Scenicruiser, began to be delivered in 1954. It was a 40-foot long bus, approximately 12.2 meters, with capacity for 45 passengers, 33 of whom were on the upper floor. Due to its increased weight, it received a third axle, very unusual for the time, and in this case, it had a double wheel. It received a curious engine configuration, in fact, two Detroit Diesel 4-71 engines, 2-stroke diesel, 4 cylinders in line, 4.7 liters and 160 HP each, mounted side by side at the rear, connected by a hydraulic coupling scheme, a system that would be replaced by the new 318HP V8 Detroit Diesel engine. Between 1954 and 1956, 1001 units of the Scenicruiser were manufactured. They influenced the emergence of several buses, including in Brazil, as you can see in our other videos about buses: Ciferal Dinossauro: • CIFERAL DINOSAUR BUS - history ...
