KH. Abdul Karim was born in 1856 AD in the village of Diyangan, Kawedanan, Mertoyudan, Magelang, Central Java, from the couple Kiai Abdur Rahim and Nyai Salamah. Manab was his childhood name and he was the third son of four siblings. When he was 14 years old, he began to travel the world in gaining religious knowledge and at that time he left with his older brother (Kiai Aliman). The first Islamic boarding school he visited was in the village of Babadan, Gurah, Kediri. Then he continued his wanderings to the Cepoko area, 20 km south of Nganjuk, here for approximately 6 years. After he felt it was enough, he continued to the Trayang Islamic Boarding School, Bangsri, Kertosono, Nganjuk East Java, this is where he deepened his study of the science of the Qur'an. Then he continued his wanderings to the Sono Islamic Boarding School, east of Sidoarjo, a boarding school famous for its Shorof science, he studied at this Islamic Boarding School for 7 years. Then he studied at the Kedungdoro Islamic Boarding School, Sepanjang, Surabaya. Until finally, he continued his journey of knowledge at one of the big Islamic boarding schools on the island of Madura, under the care of the charismatic cleric; Syaikhona Kholil Bangkalan. He studied in Madura for quite a long time, around 23 years. At the age of 40, KH. Abdul Karim continued his search for knowledge at the Tebuireng Islamic Boarding School, Jombang, East Java, which was under the care of his close friend during his time in Bangkalan Madura, KH. Hasyim Asy'ari, for approximately 5 years. Until finally KH. Hasyim Asy'ari matched KH. Abdul Karim with the daughter of Kiai Sholeh from Banjarmelati Kediri, on 8 Safar 1328 H/ 1908 M. KH. Abdul Karim married Siti Khodijah binti KH. Sholeh (Nyai Dlomroh). Two years later KH. Abdul Karim and his beloved wife moved to a new place, in a village called Lirboyo, in 1910 AD. This is the starting point for the growth of the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School. Then in 1913 AD, KH.
