The friendly janitor Matěj has a good heart, smarts to give away and, in addition to puzzles, he also likes Majdalenka, the daughter of the farmer he works for. Majdalenka returns his love, but her father has already chosen another groom for her, the magistrate's son Jakub. However, nothing is lost because Matěj saved the white dove and in return he brought a magical strawberry, thanks to which he and his sweetheart can understand the language of birds. When the farmer throws Matěj out, the young man goes to the castle, where they are competing in riddles for the hand of Princess Rosemary. Whoever guesses three gets her as his wife. Unlike the others, Matěj is not frightened when the king announces the addition that whoever does not guess will lose his ears and nose. He playfully guesses her riddle, while she can't solve his and has to give him a kiss. It will be the same the next day. That's when Matěj meets the soldier Ondra, who secretly loves the princess, as well as the general, the hofmeister, and the lady of the court, who are greedy and always making trouble. He forces Matěj to promise to give up the princess and divide the reward between them, which the king offers him as compensation, but the barrister transports them and further punishes them. He decides to return to Majdalen, but on the way he is ambushed by bandits with Chief Madlafous and forces him to join them. He helps them rob the gold, the robbers betray him and he ends up in a dungeon. The court master, the general and the lady of the court are already looking forward to the execution. With Ondra's help, Matěj uncovers all the intrigues, punishes the robbers, shows the princess the true groom and earns Majdalenka.
