The Most Beautiful Images of Izmir from the Time Tunnel! 1971 #eskiizmir We would like to thank Mr. Ali Uzcan for the images. @aliuzcan308 Between 1923 and 1933, Izmir was decorated with structures reflecting Turkish characteristics, and an effort was made to create a contemporary city. The selamlık section of the Salepçizade Mansion on Beyler Sokak was converted into the Izmir National Library in 1912 in line with the efforts of the Union and Progress Society. The Elhamra Cinema next to the National Library was built between 1922 and 1926. This neoclassical structure is currently used as the Izmir State Opera and Ballet. Another architectural product of this period was the “Turkish Hearth Building” built in 1925 and currently used as the Izmir State Theater. One of the most important achievements of Izmir’s development efforts was undoubtedly the Republic Square and the Atatürk monument located in this square. In 1932, the Republic Square was organized and the Gazi Statue was placed in the same year. Until the 1940s, the basic practices carried out to give Izmir a modern appearance were to open regular roads and boulevards, create squares and large green areas, ensure the city's illumination and develop a regular transportation system. During this period, many boulevards such as Mimar Kemalettin Street, Şükrü Saraçoğlu Boulevard, Kazım Paşa Boulevard, Plevne Boulevard, Vasıf Çınar Street and Fevzi Paşa Boulevard were opened. Karşıyaka turned into a developed and lively district of the city. Great importance was given to providing the city with green areas and parks, and this goal was achieved by draining the marshes or removing old cemeteries. Content preparation, editing: Akif Tanrıkulu
