Saturday 24 August 2024, Francesco and I are in Toffol, near Selva di Cadore, above Santa Fosca. From here we set off on today's hike that will take us to the Mondeval area, we will reach the Giau fork and then return to Toffol with a circular tour. From the last houses in the village we take path 465 on grassy terrain and as we climb we enter the woods. The 465 soon becomes a forest road that always goes uphill. After climbing 200 m the path becomes narrow. We reach Col Pizol, 1738 m above sea level. After 450 m of altitude difference the landscape begins to open up, the first Dolomite peaks stand out against the blue sky. A little further up the woods also stop, the environment becomes more alpine, low grass and light rocks, steep very high walls. One step after another we reach the Giau pass (2360 m), many hikers coming from the pass of the same name are enjoying the view. From Toffol, however, we have not seen anyone coming up. We eat speck sandwiches and some raisins. We take path 436 to the right, we stay at the base of the Lastoi de Formin and further ahead of the Spiz de Mondeval. In this entire stretch the path winds practically flat, following the soft profile of grassy hills. We move away slightly from path 436 to go around the small Baste lake; in front of us, in the distance, the imposing mass of Mount Pelmo. We return to 436 but a little further ahead we turn right to go and have a look around the archaeological site where a Mesolithic burial was found in 1987, the so-called Mondeval man, now on display in a museum in Selva di Cadore. We set off again towards the Ambrizzola fork where the path forks, on one side it goes towards Croda da Lago, while we keep right on path 466 towards the south. We arrive at Mondeval de Sora (2133 m) after 9 km traveled. Going down we follow the course of a quiet stream that slides down the valley. At 1921 m altitude we meet Mondeval de Sota. In my initial intentions we should not have come this far but we had to push on towards Piz del Corvo. Continuing straight on path 466 we arrive on a small asphalt road that cuts through the woods and descends towards Pescul. Further on we follow the signs towards Toffol and then return to the woods to descend towards Santa Fosca where two delicious ice creams await us at the Bar Bianco. After a tasty break we return to the road and in five minutes we reach the car and return to Masarè. Another beautiful excursion today!
