In 1980, two people from the Rhineland pulled off one of the most spectacular million-dollar coups in German history: The two robbed the retail giant Metro of 36 million DM. From then on, they enjoyed a life of luxury, first at home on Düsseldorf's Kö, then on the Copacabana - until Metro noticed the financial hole and offered a reward for the two of them. Up until then, the two had actually led an inconspicuous life: Manfred Vowinkel was a waiter in Düsseldorf, his friend Günter Schotte-Natscheff was a qualified banker looking for a job. In 1980, he started working for the Düsseldorf Metro as a financial planner. This was to fundamentally change the lives of both of them. Günter often felt unfairly treated by his arrogant boss in his new job. He wanted to get back at him and came up with a plan. In order to expose the gaps in the company's supposedly highly secure financial system, he simply transferred Metro money to his friend Manfred's private account using forged signatures. But the initial prank turned into the jackpot for the two crooks. Every day, Vowinkel collected the millions from the Düsseldorf Stadtsparkasse and the two treated themselves to whatever their hearts desired. When they had amassed 36 million DM, however, things got too hot at home. At the beginning of January 1981, they made off. They headed off to Rio de Janeiro via Paris. With 16 suitcases full of money. The Düsseldorf Metro only noticed the million-dollar hole when it wanted to take over Kaufhof in January 1981.
