Our website: audioclasicos.com The Work The protagonist of The Metamorphosis is Gregor Samsa, son of middle-class parents from Prague, Flaubertian philistines, only interested in the material side of life, in short, beings of vulgar tastes. About five years earlier, old Samsa had lost much of his fortune, so his son Gregor was forced to take a job with one of his father's creditors and become a traveling salesman. His father then stopped working, his sister Grete was too young to do so, and his mother was suffering from asthma. So Gregor not only supports the entire family, but has also found them the apartment in which they now live. We are in Prague, Central Europe, in the year 1912; the maid is cheap, so the Samsas can afford a maid, sixteen-year-old Anna (a year younger than Grete), and a cook. Gregor is away traveling most of the time; but as the story opens, he finds himself spending the night at home, between two business trips; and then something horrible happens… Some opinions “Look carefully at Kafka’s style. Its clarity, its precise, formal tone, in sharp contrast to the nightmarish subject matter of the story. There are no poetic metaphors to adorn this black-and-white story. The sharpness of his style underlines the dark richness of his fantasy. Contrast and unity, style and substance, plot and form, have met, have achieved perfect cohesion.” Vladimir Nabokov, “Commentary on The Metamorphosis” “If Kafka’s Metamorphosis seems to anyone to be anything more than an entomological fantasy, I congratulate him on having joined the ranks of good and great readers.” Vladimir Nabokov, “Commentary on The Metamorphosis”
