The Massacre of the 7th Cavalry - A Sioux-sympathetic cavalry officer arranges a meeting between Chief Sitting Bull and President Grant, but a crooked Indian agent and an obnoxious General Custer test the Sioux's patience, threatening to derail the peace talks. The Massacre of the 7th Cavalry (1954) Director: Sidney Salkow Writers: Jack DeWitt, Sidney Salkow Cast: Dale Robertson, Mary Murphy, J. Carrol Naish Genres: Western, Drama Country: Mexico, USA Language: English Release date: October 6, 1954 (USA) Filming locations: Mexico Story: Sioux Chief Sitting Bull is forced by the Indian-hating General Custer to respond with violence, resulting in the famous “Last Stand” at Little Bighorn. Parrish, a friend of the Sioux, tries to prevent the bloodshed, but is court-martialed for “collaborating” with the enemy. Sitting Bull, however, manages to intercede with President Grant on Parrish’s behalf. Review: Historians love to quibble and criticize Hollywood’s treatment of “real history.” But the “bottom line” is that most movies are made as entertainment with a profit motive. So, historical “facts” aside, as an entertaining piece of early Cinemascope film (the first independent) in the first half of the “Western Decade,” you could do a lot worse than this well-intentioned film about the Sioux chief “Sitting Bull,” his constant battles with “forked-tongued” treaties, and general inhumane treatment of prisoners, leading up to the “Battle of the Little Big Horn” and Custer’s final stand. The advancement of some “facts” is a consideration to make the film attractive at the box office. But the film deserves credit for bucking the trend of “white man’s victory is called victory…Indian’s victory is called massacre” and taking a different kind of liberal approach. Ultimately, it isn’t guilty of overdoing the rewriting of history and shows respectable behavior on both sides. The cast is weak, but the story and epic battles are well staged, engaging and somewhat informative. All in all…a good film and definitely…worth seeing.
