This brave and loyal Corps has its origins in 1537 with the creation of the Old Companies of the Sea of Naples by a provision of King Charles I who ordered the creation of units of arquebusiers permanently assigned to the Royal Navy, with exclusive combat missions in boarding enemy ships and in the defense of their own galleys. Then came in 1566, with Philip II, the creation of different specific Tercios permanently assigned to the Navy for the fight against the Turks. Among them the "Tercio of the Navy of the Ocean Sea" decisive in the Battle of Lepanto. Ana María de Soto y Alhama was the first woman to form part of this Corps.
