The Madenburg was built on the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest on a rocky outcrop of the Rothenberg that juts out into the Rhine plain. The ruins, surrounded by forest, lie about 250 m above Eschbach at a height of 458 m above sea level. It is one of the largest and oldest castles in the Palatinate. The elongated castle complex runs roughly north-south. It is divided into the southern outer castle and the northern inner castle, surrounded by a moat complex. In the north, the castle was protected by two moats with strong shield walls. Access was secured by a gun bastion, which was partially built over the northern (younger) moat. The castle gate can be reached through the western moat, which was originally secured by gates at both ends, and the remains of a formerly strong gate bastion.
