A Soviet feature film, shot at the Sverdlovsk Film Studio. Engineer Roman suddenly learns that his wife Katya no longer loves him, but loves his friend Pyotr, a first-class mechanic, and wants to leave her for him. This is how the morning of the longest day of the year begins. Shocked, Roman demands that his wife and Pyotr stop communicating with each other. However, not allowing his personal life to interfere with his public life, Roman goes with Pyotr on a business trip to the construction of a hydroelectric power station, where an excavator manufactured at their machine-building plant breaks down. The plant commission establishes the cause of the breakdown, but Pyotr proves himself to be such a high-class excavator operator during the excavator's testing that the site manager offers him a new job at the construction site. Pyotr agrees, demanding that he be provided with separate housing (a room) in exchange. During lunch, crane operator Matveich approached the plant representatives and told them his rationalization proposal. Petr and Roman go to Matveich at the crane, but as a result of an emergency Petr gets seriously injured and only thanks to Roman escapes death. Roman and Petr return to their city by passing transport. During the trip, Roman understands that the reason for his wife leaving was his patriarchal attitude towards her, and Petr understands how hard it is for his friend from the destruction of the family, which he is causing. Katya accidentally goes into her workshop, where she worked before marriage, and realizes the need for a lot of work and the impossibility of remaining a housewife. For all three, the morning of a new day begins...
