Mustafa Kemal Atatürk is the symbol of the Turkish nation's struggle for independence and the founder of our Republic. Born in Thessaloniki in 1881, Atatürk led the War of Independence, which he started in 1919, to victory with the leadership he showed in his military and political career, and declared the Republic of Turkey on October 29, 1923. Atatürk was not only a statesman, but also a leader who laid the foundations of modern Turkey and transformed education, law, economy and social structure with radical reforms.
