The boi is a popular folklore practiced by groups and communities throughout Brazil. It has European, African and Amerindian influences and is a great fascination for children and adults alike. It is a mix of dance, music, theater, visual arts and literature. The tradition was established in colonial times, during the slavery period, and has withstood historical transformations and the end of the slave regime, reaching the present day as one of the main icons of Brazilian popular culture. Versatile in nature and full of elements that can be adapted to different sociocultural contexts, the boi folklore concentrates a broad symbolic repertoire and channels the expression of feelings, emotions and social expectations. The Boi Bolé group is the result of research and activities carried out by Parabolé Educação e Cultura in the field of folklore. Since 2008, we have promoted experiences, workshops and presentations of the boi folklore in educational institutions and community spaces. Three popular traditions directly influenced us in the creation of Boi Bolé. First, the Boi de Reis from the northern region of Minas Gerais, from which we learned the structure of the play, as well as some characters and most of the songs used. Second, the Boi de Matraca from São Luís do Maranhão, whose scenic development, locally called “comédia”, inspires the theatrical plot we created and gives substance to the mythological figure of the character Boi. Third, the Boi de Mamão from Paraná and Santa Catarina, from which some of the songs used and also some characters come. Our goal is to provide educators and students with an experience that broadens their view of this typical Brazilian folkloric manifestation. We intend to stimulate interest in popular art and highlight the plurality of artistic compositions that result from the cultural diversity of our country.
