About :

They do not set conditions for the future, because they have already given generously in the past, with care and dedication. There are many famous men and women who have wanted to favor in their will the people who remained in their service, often for a lifetime, so much so that they have become a discreet shadow. Just like the butlers and housekeepers of "Downton Abbey", the TV series that has had great success precisely because it tells the story of the two opposite levels of English society in the early 1900s, putting them on the same level. One of the most generous is Enrico De Nicola, the first president of the Republic after the institutional referendum of 1946 (which will also be discussed in the next episode). Butlers and housekeepers have inspired artists and writers. Rosalia, who worked as a maid since she was a child, was the muse of Tamara De Lempicka, the queen of Art Deco; Jeeves is the protagonist of dozens of comic novels by the English writer PG Wodehouse, and you may remember James Ivory's film "The Remains of the Day", in which an extraordinary Anthony Hopkins plays Stevens, devoted to serving his master to the point of sacrificing any personal aspiration, including love. Or the housekeeper Peggotty, who Charles Dickens describes as a woman with a kind and charitable soul, who remains fond of David Copperfield throughout his life and becomes a second mother to him. Different examples of people who take care of strangers, then becoming part of their family (like carers today): it happened with a great writer like Alessandro Manzoni or with stars of the entertainment world like Alberto Sordi, Maria Callas, Raimondo Vianello and Sandra Mondaini. All figures and cases that highlight the importance of legal institutions such as disinheritance, inheritance agreements, revocation of the will (which becomes central for example in an opera like Giacomo Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi"). These are the wills told in the fifth episode of "The Last Will", with the voices of Micol Sarfatti, Rita Querzè and Giulio Biino. "The Last Will: The Wills That Made Italy Great", is an 8-episode podcast series created by Corriere della Sera that tells the story of our country through the original point of view of the wills of illustrious Italians. It comes out every Friday. Listen to it on Corriere: https://www.corriere.it/podcast/l-ult...
