His face and eyes betray that he is a man very hardened by this life. However, we quickly learn that there is still passion inside. After receiving a telegram from Linda, his former lover (played by Kay Lenz), asking for his presence, he abandons his woman, mounts his horse, and rides to Linda's without a moment's hesitation. Upon arrival, he learns that Linda is now happily married to the owner of the local general store. The only trace of her past is her daughter, whom Frank is surprised to learn is his. The daughter, of course, does not know about Frank. Linda, not wanting her to know that her father was a notorious gunfighter, has given her a fictitious father who died a hero's death at the First Battle of Bull Run. Frank quickly learns that the reason Linda is calling him has nothing to do with romantic feelings. She wants him to protect her husband. It seems that there has been an attempted bank robbery in town, and the local sheriff and one of the robbers have been killed. The other robber is in prison, waiting to be hanged, and Linda's husband has been appointed to the position of interim sheriff. The prisoner's cousin is due out of prison in a few days and has made it clear that he will do whatever it takes to get his relative out of prison. Linda's husband believes the town will support him when the fight comes, but Linda knows better. He knows he'll be killed if Frank doesn't agree to help him. The story unfolds as Frank begins to come to terms with the fact that Linda, and by extension his newfound daughter, are forever out of his reach.
