The late Mrs. Kim Young-han, the founder of Gilsangsa Temple, a clear and fragrant temple, was born in 1916, a dark period in our nation's history, and at the age of 16, she entered the world as a gisaeng (眞香) under the tutelage of Geumha (琴下) Ha Gyu-il. In 1953, at the age of 16, she graduated from the Department of English Literature at Chung-Ang University. During her lifetime, she not only wrote [Baekseok, a name that cannot be erased in my heart], [My love Baekseok], and [Biography of Seonga Ha Gyu-il], but she also made a great supporter of KAIST to foster the driving forces of our country's scientific development, and she also donated funds to the creative writing and criticism companies to lead the 'Baekseok Literature Award' in honor of the poet Baek Seok. Born as Kim Yeong-han (金英韓), with the name Jin-hyang (眞香), as a man’s wife, and as a businesswoman, and ending her life with the name Gil-sang-hwa (吉祥華), she lived a life of suffering, but she returned all the wealth she had accumulated throughout her life to society and generously donated 7,000 pyeong of land and buildings to be turned into a pure and fragrant Buddha’s temple. Gil-sang-hwa left behind this will, “When I die, cremate me and scatter my ashes in the backyard of Gilsangheon on a snowy day,” and took her physical body on November 14, 1999. Since then, Gilsangsa Temple holds a memorial service for Gil-sang-hwa Bodhisattva every year on the 7th day of the 10th lunar month, carrying on the legacy of her deeds. Moreover, her pure and noble soul will forever remain precious like a pearl that never fades.
