We visited the Santa Eufrásia Farm, built around 1830, located in Vassouras, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The Santa Eufrásia Farm is the only private farm listed by IPHAN in the Vale do Café. Originally a coffee producer, the Santa Eufrásia Farm was built in the mid-19th century by Comendador Ezequiel de Araújo Padilha, a socially recognized farmer and knight of the Order of the Roses, and his brother Pedro Petras Padilha. Ezequiel liked to hold lavish parties and soirees on the farm, and he also imported gondolas from Venice to take romantic rides around the reservoir. From 1895 onwards, the property had several owners, including the Inglês de Souza family, until, in 1905, Colonel Horácio José de Lemos and D. Francisca (D. Chiquinha) bought the farm. They destroyed the existing coffee plantations and started raising cattle, exporting the meat to Europe. The current owners of the farm, the heirs of Alzira Inglês de Souza, are descendants of Colonel Horácio Lemos, and today, they have taken over a coffee plantation in production on the farm. It is currently a private residential farm, and receives daily visits by appointment.
