The construction of the facility was started during World War II by the Germans, who needed new sources of energy for Wrocław, which were beyond the reach of the Allies. It was decided to build the power plant in Bytom, right next to the Miechowice coal mine, which was a permanent source of coal. It was to be the largest power plant in the Third Reich. In 1944, the construction of the power plant was almost complete and 3 out of 4 turbine sets were working. However, when the facility was taken over by the Soviets in 1945, the power plant was shut down and all valuable equipment, including turbine sets and boilers, was taken deep into the Soviet Union. In total, this amounted to over 800 wagons. Interesting fact: Allegedly, in the 1970s, the Soviet Union wanted to... resell the stolen machines to Poland... ...which could have been related to their inept dismantling and the resulting inability to reassemble and start them up again. This would not be surprising. After returning the empty halls and bare walls, the Poles rebuilt the power plant based on the original plans and restarted it in 1954. At that time, it was the largest power plant in the country. In the following decades, the facility focused on heat production, until it eventually became a combined heat and power plant. In 2011, the combined heat and power plant passed from the State Treasury to the Finnish company Fortum. In 2019, the combined heat and power plant was shut down because its outdated technology did not meet European environmental standards. In 2023, a Polish company bought the facility from the Finns and soon began demolishing it. Ultimately, only four characteristic chimneys are to remain of the facility. Today, after hundreds of people worked here, there are many everyday objects left, clothes, glasses in baskets, handwritten notes, and even full bottles of orange soda. I hope that I will be able to capture on camera this extraordinary object and the memories of the people who worked there every day, before the heavy excavators finally raze it to the ground and thus close the last chapter of its history.
