It was born within the framework of the Crusades and from the beginning, together with its hospitaller activity, it carried out military actions against Muslim armies (initially Arab, and later also Turkish).3 Today it is internationally recognized by nations as a subject of international law. Its headquarters, which has changed location several times, is currently located in the city of Rome, Italy, on Via dei Condotti, in the Magistral Palace4, near the Spanish Steps. That building and the Villa Magistral del Aventino, which functions as its embassy to the Italian Republic, have extraterritorial status.
