The alleged perpetrator murdered two young people and injured several others. How could the attack happen? ************************* NOTE Dear people, we are always happy to offer you the opportunity to criticize our documentaries here on the channel. For this film, however, we have decided not to offer the comment function - to protect all the people appearing in the film. Some of them had already received threats of violence, including murder, in advance. This is so serious that we want to avoid spreading anything like this on our channel from the outset. We hope for your understanding! You can send us serious criticism of our film by email: [email protected]. The NDR Story team ************************* MORE ABOUT THE FILM: On January 25, 2023, Ann-Marie and Danny meet Ibrahim A. by chance on the train. They get on together in Neumünster, and less than a quarter of an hour later the young people are dead. The trail of the alleged perpetrator stretches through three federal states. He is said to have committed several crimes, including at least two attacks with a knife, but he was still able to move freely in Germany under the radar of the authorities. Bereaved parents: Every day is a fight for survival Michael Kyrath takes a sip of water. His daughter Ann-Marie was the only child in the family. For him and his wife Birgit, every day is a fight for survival, every day drains their energy. But Ann-Marie said giving up was not an option. That has become the mantra for both of them. The memory of that Wednesday in January, the last moments with his daughter, are as present to Michael Kyrath as if he were reliving them right now. First everyday life, then the worry that Ann-Marie is not coming home from school, the call from a friend that there had been an attack on the train, the journey to Brokstedt, the fear that becomes such a brutal certainty at the train station that his memory breaks off at that point. Weapon used: meat knife from the supermarket Ann-Marie and Danny had only been together for five days when they set off home together on that January day. When the attacker began to stab Ann-Marie with the meat knife on the train, Danny tried to protect her and threw himself between them, the public prosecutor later stated. One of the stabs went straight through his heart. Ibrahim A. is suspected of stabbing the young people a total of 38 times before he began his horror train through the compartments. Suspected perpetrator known to the police before the crime Ibrahim A. is known to the police. In December 2014, he arrived in Germany after a long escape route. Less than a year later, he began committing crimes. Most of the proceedings were dropped. But then he attacked an asylum seeker in North Rhine-Westphalia with a sharp object, injuring his chin. He was convicted, but the authorities failed to inform the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. He was still allowed to move freely in Germany. In Kiel he was thrown out of the accommodation because he threatened people and handled a knife. In Hamburg he stabbed a homeless man so often that he severed numerous tendons. He was taken into custody. There were indications of mental illness. Several authorities are now dealing with Ibrahim A., but apparently no one feels responsible. Despite numerous indications that he is mentally ill and poses a danger to himself and others, he is finally put on the street with a triple dose of methadone in his blood. Six days later he presumably kills Ann-Marie and Danny. A precise reconstruction of Ibrahim A.'s life traces his path, as well as the failure of the authorities and the struggle of the bereaved, who find themselves in a daily life where nothing is as it was.
