Unkei was a sublime sculptor active during the Kamakura period. The commentary focuses on three statues of Dainichi Nyorai. This is an art program in which actor Aijima Kazuyuki visits Unkei's Buddhist statues. Unkei is a representative sculptor in the history of Japanese Buddhist statues, active from the end of the Heian period to the early Kamakura period. He is a sculptor who elevated realistic depictions of the human body to sublime objects of prayer. Even now, more than 800 years later, Unkei's Buddhist statues continue to fascinate viewers. This special program focuses on three Dainichi Nyorai statues from among the surviving statues of Unkei. To explore the background of their creation and the secrets of their beauty, we visit temples associated with Unkei and three key people. The hosts of the program are actor Aijima Kazuyuki, who has played the role of Unkei in a TV drama, and freelance announcer Kubo Sarina, who loves Buddhist statues. The three key people are photographer Tomohiro Mutsuda from Nara, sculptor and restorer Takaya Fujimagari, and finally, leading Unkei researcher and Hanzomon Museum Director Tsutomu Yamamoto. With easy-to-understand commentary from the perspective of each of their fields of expertise, the program will deliver an art show that will make you want to go and see Unkei's Buddhist statues.
