Following the destruction of Carthage, the kingdom of Numidia became the most important state in East Africa, containing many flourishing cities that were centres of considerable trade. Masinissa, a faithful Roman ally since the Punic Wars, left this kingdom to his son Micipsa, who had two sons and a nephew, Jugurtha, a brilliant and ambitious young man who had served under Scipio in the Spanish-Numantine War and who returned to Africa showered with honours.
