I have always been interested in documenting the history of the Third Saudi State, explaining the important historical contexts it went through, the great effort made by the founding king, Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman - may God have mercy on him - and the details of the unification of this great country. My guest in this episode is Talal Al-Tarifi, Professor of Modern and Contemporary History at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University. He tells us many stories, and narrates important history and pivotal events in the journey of the founding king, Abdulaziz - may God have mercy on him. Al-Tarifi says: Since Imam Abdul Rahman, the father of King Abdulaziz, left Riyadh, the obsession of regaining Najd remained firmly in the mind of his son, King Abdulaziz, since he was young. The founding king often discussed with his father, trying to convince him to regain Riyadh, but his father refused. So what is the story of their departure from Riyadh in the first place, and why did the Imam refuse his son’s request, and how was King Abdulaziz able to convince him in the end? After regaining Riyadh, how did he annex the rest of the regions: Qassim, Hail, Hijaz and Asir, one after the other, or rather regain them, as my guest indicates, as “reclaimed regions that were originally part of the First Saudi State”? How did King Abdulaziz use his political acumen to unify it and make it a stable and secure kingdom? Why did he choose the monarchy for his country?
