Hanne Mattersberger loves chickens. Her small farm near Reichshof in North Rhine-Westphalia is a chicken paradise, where the beautiful rooster George leads a happy life with a flock of almost twenty hens: pecking, scratching, bathing in dust, lying in the sun all day long. And every now and then an egg. For Hanne Mattersberger, this is peace, comfort and a perfect world. But not all of her chickens had a good life from the start. Some were once laying hens from factory farming, from egg factories. The film follows several chicken keepers like Hanne Mattersberger and Robert Becker from the "Save the Chicken" association during a so-called "rehousing": 1,200 chickens from a laying farm are brought to a new home. For some chicken keepers, the condition of their charges is a shock. "If my chickens looked like these laying hens, I would have the veterinary office here tomorrow and no one in the village would talk to me anymore," says Hanne Mattersberger. "But that's legal in the food industry!" Everything should now be fine for the retired laying hens. Chicken coops are being made as comfortable as possible and chicken sweaters are available. The chickens should recover and if all goes well, these egg workers will be beautiful, happy hens after a summer. Just like on the egg cartons in supermarkets. __ A film for people up close by by Annette Zinkant Other documentaries on the topic: Wolves - protect or shoot? - • Wolves - protect or shoot? WDR...
