The Jolo Island hostage drama began on Easter Sunday, April 23, 2000, when a group of Muslim insurgents called Abu Sayyaf kidnapped 21 international tourists and several local workers on Sipadan Island in Malaysia. The group transported the hostages to Jolo Island in the Philippines. The hijacking led to a months-long crisis that received widespread attention worldwide and especially in Finland, because two Finns, Seppo Fränti and Risto Vahanen, were among them. Abu Sayyaf made several demands, including ransom and political concessions. Diplomatic and military efforts were launched to free the hostages! Libya, the European Union and the government of the Philippines played key roles in the negotiations. Muammar Gaddafi paid a significant amount of ransom in an effort to improve Libya's international reputation. During the hostage crisis, the hostages, including Finns Fränti and Vahanen, faced many difficulties, such as illness, hunger and fear.
