On the 9th, the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force unveiled the AAV7 amphibious vehicle, which is scheduled to be deployed to the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade to be established in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, at Camp Fuji (Oyama Town, Shizuoka Prefecture). The vehicle is used by the U.S. Marine Corps for landing on remote islands, and the Ministry of Defense will procure 52 vehicles by fiscal 2018 to strengthen its remote island recapture capabilities. 20.3 billion yen (for 30 vehicles) has been allocated to the fiscal 2015 budget proposal. The AAV7 is about 8 meters long and weighs about 20 tons. It can run at a maximum speed of 72 kilometers per hour on land and 13 kilometers per hour on the sea, like a ship. It can carry 21 personnel and operate for about 7 hours. It is equipped with a pump that can drain about 1,600 liters of water per minute even if the vehicle is flooded.
