(6) Nahl, 16:61 Of the four archangels, the angel of death, often identified as Azrael, is perhaps the least known. According to Islamic traditions, this angel observes the faces of humans on several occasions daily. He is tasked with taking the souls of the living at the time of their death, a mission that naturally arouses human fear due to our inherent fear of death (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) (The Enlightenment Journey). The belief is that the angel of death is constantly present, often without our awareness. This omnipresence in our daily lives can be interpreted as a manifestation of the divine mission he fulfills. The angel of death, as an agent of God, ensures that souls are collected at their appointed time, without neglect (In the Eyes of Gaia). When God entrusted this task to the angel of death, the latter was concerned about the negative perception that humans might have of him. To assuage this concern, God promised that various illnesses, accidents, and disasters would be the apparent causes of human death, thus allowing the angel of death to fulfill his role without being directly blamed by mortals (Scholar). These stories show not only the fearsome nature of the angel of death's mission, but also the dimension of mercy and compassion that accompanies it, reflecting a more peaceful view of death as a transition to the afterlife (The Enlightenment Journey) (In the Eyes of Gaia).
