In 1418, Brunelleschi won the competition for the construction of the dome of the transept of Florence Cathedral, considered by many scholars to be the first great work of Renaissance architecture. However, in the dome of the cathedral, both from a formal and technical point of view, Brunelleschi carried out a majestic pointed arch work, clearly indebted to all the innovations of the Gothic world. But, at the same time, from 1419 he also began to build the Hospital of the Innocents in Florence and here he applied all the ideas he had gathered about classical Roman architecture after having spent several years studying the ruins of Rome. The most visible symbol of the Hospital of the Innocents and the true starting point of Renaissance architecture was the loggia, a portico of nine bays bordered by semicircular arches on Ionic columns, bays covered by groin vaults. However, this solution had hardly been used in the Roman Empire, so that the revival of classical architecture was actually based on an element that was not specific to the Roman world.
