He continued his primary and secondary studies in Fort-Rousset (now Owando). After obtaining his primary school certificate, he joined the army in 1953. Ngouabi then left for France for military training, attending the École militaire interarmes de Saint-Cyr in 1961. He continued his training in Algeria and Mali. Upon his return to Congo, he quickly rose through the military ranks. In 1968, Marien Ngouabi, then a captain, played a key role in the coup d'état that overthrew President Alphonse Massamba-Débat. Ngouabi became President of the People's Republic of the Congo on 31 December 1968, establishing a Marxist-Leninist regime and founding the Congolese Labour Party (PCT) in 1969. Under his presidency, the Congo adopted a policy of nationalization and socialist reforms. During his term, Marien Ngouabi implemented various reforms to establish a socialist state. He sought to modernize the Congolese economy, strengthen domestic industry, and promote education and health. His regime was marked by an alliance with the Soviet Union and other Eastern Bloc countries. Ngouabi's presidency was also marked by internal tensions, coup attempts, and growing opposition. In 1972, he survived an assassination attempt. His policy of repression against dissidents and political opponents was criticized. On 18 March 1977, Marien Ngouabi was assassinated in Brazzaville.
