Congratulations São Paulo, 469 years old The metropolis of buses. Commemorative date. January 25th. Bus companies. Mobility and public transportation have always been the driving force behind São Paulo's progress. As the city grew, people needed to travel from one place to another to work, visit friends, and study. The capital was a pioneer in new technologies for transporting people quickly, comfortably, and safely. The first means of public transportation used in Brazil was the animal-drawn tram, called the Sant'Anna tram, adopted in 1872. The service was hindered by the lack of operational flexibility, since the tram did not make curves and was forced to come and go on the same track. To minimize the difficulty, the Sant'Anna tram had the same front and back, and when it reached its final stop, passengers turned their seat backs so that everyone could continue the journey facing their destination. The coming and going on the same track was short-lived. It lasted until the first electric tram arrived in São Paulo, a great technological advance, with two doors and nine seats, in which the first three were reserved for non-smokers. The rest could be occupied without restrictions. There was this division of public because the tram was open and those who did not smoke were bothered by the cigar smoke that the wind brought. The tram began to spread and bring progress throughout the city. Wherever a tram line passed, commerce and industries also arrived.
