The history of hip hop ranges from racism in the USA to frozen pizzas and iced teas on German supermarket shelves. Rappers like Sido, Apache 207 and bands like the Fantastischen Vier are the faces of German hip hop and represent a music genre that dates back to the 1970s. Hip hop has its origins in the neglected districts of American cities, such as the Bronx in New York. This is where the four basic elements of hip hop emerged: breakdancing, graffiti, DJing and MCing or rapping. Even if it is still disputed today which representatives carry the "true hip hop DNA". By the 1980s at the latest, hip hop reached Germany and changed not only the German music scene, but also the lifestyle of young people. Dance crews were formed in both the Federal Republic and the GDR, and the first German hip hoppers appeared. In the 90s, hip hop became popular with the masses: a golden age with songs like "Die Da?!" by the Fantastischen Vier. Too gentle for some hip hop fans. After the turn of the millennium, German rap lyrics often became more aggressive and the beats rougher. Artists like Sido and Bushido released their first albums. Today, hip hop is more diverse than ever: there are hard, sometimes contemptuous lyrics and a variety of self-portrayal, but also completely different tones: self-ironic lyrics and pop autotune beats. In recent years, more and more women like Shirin David, Loredana and Nura have been making names for themselves in the German hip hop scene.
