Vilsandi National Park is the largest marine national park in Estonia and the most island-rich region. The protected area covers an area of 24,000 ha, 2/3 of which is covered by the sea. The westernmost point of Estonia – Nootamaa Island – is located here. The history of Vilsandi National Park dates back to 1910, when the Vaika Bird Sanctuary was established – the first protected area in the Baltic States. The Vaika National Nature Reserve, established in 1957, was renamed the Vilsandi National Nature Reserve in 1971, which in turn became Vilsandi National Park in 1993. Vilsandi National Park was established to protect the marine and coastal landscapes of the West Estonian archipelago, its nature and cultural heritage. The area of the national park remains in the Natura 2000 network as the Vilsandi, Tagamõisa and Karala-Pilgus bird and nature areas to protect habitat types and species of pan-European importance and their habitats. In 1997, Vilsandi National Park was included in the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance. Since 1990, the national park has been part of the West Estonian Islands Biosphere Program Area, which is part of the UNESCO network.
