For example, the recycling of water bottles can currently only be repeated three to four times in a row. Fortunately, research is progressing. A French company is on the trail of an enzyme that can recycle water bottles endlessly. Every time I walk by the ocean, I am horrified by the multitude of tiny pieces of plastic deposited by the waves on the beach. This phenomenon is even quantifiable, the equivalent of a garbage truck full of plastic waste is dumped into the oceans every minute. However, few people seem to be aware of the scale of the problem. We are fueling a vicious cycle by manufacturing more and more plastic, global production continues to increase and increase. The situation is worse in developing countries. We have seen the unsustainable open-air dump of Dandora in Kenya. It is one of the largest in the world, and it continues to expand even though it already borders schools and shanty towns. Kenyans must fight because the United States wants to send them their used plastics so that they can be recycled and reused in Africa. The USA does not know how to get rid of its plastic waste since China no longer wants to collect it. As a result, many American cities have given up on selective sorting. We went to see this in a city in Florida where all plastics are now left in the open air. In this original format combining investigation and discovery of our most precious ecosystems, Hugo Clément takes us closer to the women and men who are fighting to defend the planet.
