Classic Alpine peak On and around the Großglockner between the Stüdlgrat and the High Alpine Road With over 5000 ascents in summer, the Großglockner is one of the great destinations in the Alps. Austria's highest mountain is a myth and was first climbed very early: over 200 years ago. Like few other mountains, the "King of the Hohe Tauern" shows how natural landscape, history and all the tourist trappings overlap around a mountain. A hundred years ago, the timber industrialist Albert Wirth donated the Großglockner to the Alpine Association, laying the foundation for what would later become the national park. And despite all of this, the climb is still a very special experience today. Our route takes us all over the mountain: we set off at five in the morning with Peter Tembler, the "caretaker" of the Großglockner, and Martin Gratz, the leader of the Kals band at the Stüdlhütte, to reach the summit of this alpine classic via the Stüdlgrat, which was first climbed 150 years ago. The descent via Adlersruhe follows the historic route of the first climbers through the Leitertal and past the Salmhütte to the Carinthian side of the Großglockner. There the path reaches the foothills of the Pasterze, the largest glacier in Austria, which has lost a kilometer of its length in the last ten years alone. Ice floes float on the newly formed lake and this backdrop captivates almost a million visitors every year on the High Alpine Road, making the Großglockner, together with Schönbrunn Palace, the most visited tourist attraction in the Alpine Republic.
