The Soviet offensive in Syväri began on 20-21 June 1944. The superior enemy attacked the front line of the 5th Division in Lotinanpello with force and as a result of the breach of the defensive positions, the Finns retreated to the PSS line, the Pisi-Saarimäki-Sammatus level. At the same time, the Finnish divisions along the Syväri River retreated to the north with delay. In July 1944, the Red Army tried to break the defense of the U-station at Nietjärvi, but the Finns repelled it with heavy losses. After the attacks, the U-station front line held until the end of the war. A truce began on 5 September and a peace treaty was signed in Moscow on 19 September 1944. After this, the Finns were ordered to drive the German troops out of Finland by 19 September, but this was impossible and in practice it only happened during the autumn of 1944. Soviet troops occupied the Suomussalmi, Kuusamo and Salla areas on September 20 and only withdrew peacefully behind the agreed border on November 18, 1944. My father and Ahti Vuorensola's machine gun company retreated from the Levina front via Vosnesenja, Äänislinna, Jessoila, Nuosjärvi and Käsnäselkä to the U-position in Loimola. These delaying battles were heavy for the 7th Division and many men were left behind in the Karelian wilderness during the retreat. I have converted the photographs in the video into color images using image processing programs. #Syväri #Lotinanpelto #Levina #Aunus #salmi #Vitele #Tuulos #Nietjärvi #Lemetti #Loimola #Käsnäselkä #Uomaa #ilomantsi #
