The Gospel of Judas - Who Wrote It and Why? Who Are the Gnostics and What Is Gnosticism? The manuscript of this Gospel was discovered in the 1970s in Egypt. The scroll consisted of 62 sheets of papyrus. Scholars call it the Codex Tchacos. The text was written in Coptic around the 3rd century, but is a translation of the original from ancient Greek, which was most likely written in the middle of the 2nd century. The Gospel of Judas was the third work in the Codex Tchacos and occupies pages 33 through 58. This papyrus also contains the Epistle of Peter to Philip; the First Apocalypse of James and a fragment from the Book of Allogenes or the Book of the Foreigner. Unfortunately, due to improper storage of the manuscript, after its discovery, about 10-12% of the text of the gospel was lost. In April 2006, the world got its first access to a translation of the mysterious Gospel of Judas. Church fathers wrote about it as early as the second century. But it was only in the 21st century that scholars finally got their hands on it. What is so mysterious about this book? Judas Iscariot. We know him as the traitor who got Jesus crucified. But was he really that bad? Eventually, the image of Judas changes in the gospels. And in the Gnostic Gospel of Judas, Jesus compares his apostles to fools who sacrifice their own wives on the altar of an evil god. And only Judas Iscariot knew the secret of who Jesus really was.
