The ancient city of Samarkand is known as a crossroads of trade routes. Throughout its centuries-old history, Samarkand was a place where the cultures and traditions of various peoples coexisted peacefully and harmoniously. An integral part of the history, economy and culture of Samarkand are the Bukharan Jews. This issue is a continuation of the series about the Bukharan Jews. Here we will tell you in more detail about the Jewish diaspora of Samarkand and its famous representatives. If you have not yet subscribed to our channel, we advise you to do so immediately, we will always have a lot of interesting things. So, let's start from the beginning. Historical data on the appearance of Jews in Samarkand is scarce. For example, in the first half of the twelfth century, the historian al-Nasafi mentions Jews in Samarkand in his book "Kandiya Minor", where he tells of a Jew who built a lead aqueduct in Samarkand called "Juyi Arziz". In European sources, in the second half of the 12th century, Benjamin of Tudela, in his "Book of Travels", narrates: "From Isbagan (Isfahan) four days' journey to the Persian land of Shipaz (Shiraz), where about ten thousand Jews live. From there, at a distance of seven days' journey, on the bank of the Gozan River (Amu Darya) stands the large city of Gina (Khiva). In it there are up to eight thousand Jews, a trading city, to which merchants of all nations in the world come with goods, located on a vast plain. At a distance of five days' journey lies on the border of the Persian kingdom the large city of Samarkat (Samarkand), in it there are up to fifty thousand Jews, among whom are learned and rich people." The history of Samarkand, like that of any other ancient city, is multifaceted. The city experienced numerous ups and downs. For example, according to Meyendorff, in 1820 there were only ten Bukharan-Jewish houses in the city. Since the second half of the 19th century, recognizing the great potential of Samarkand in trade with Russia, Bukharan Jewish merchants and artisans moved here. This contributed to the economic growth of Samarkand. According to historian Alexander Lehman, who traveled to Samarkand, the number of Jews in 1841 reached 500 people. Until the first half of the 19th century, the Jews of Samarkand lived scattered in different quarters of the old city. Only in March 1843, the Jewish community in Samarkand acquired a land plot of 11 Tanobs (historians estimate this territory at 3 hectares). This territory was located near the famous Registan Square and was purchased for 10 thousand tangas. Thus, the Jewish quarter "mahalla-i yahudion" was created, which was symbolically divided into 12 plots. This number corresponded to the number of the 12 tribes of Israel. But, as is known, specific people usually stand behind progress and prosperity. Moshe Kalontar played a major role in the formation of the Bukharan Jewish quarter in Samarkand. The name of this elder of the Bukharan Jews of the 19th century will forever remain in the history of not only Samarkand, but also many cities in Central Asia. It was Moshe Kalontar who contributed to the acquisition of a plot of land in Samarkand for the construction of an entire Jewish quarter in 1843. ---------------------------------------------- Thank you very much for watching and for your wonderful support. ????
