The Giants of Sila - Fallistro Reserve 2021. Our destination today is Sila. We will take a beautiful excursion based on the history and culture of the environment. Our journey begins in the Sila Greca. We leave Campana with our car to head towards the nature reserve "I Giganti della Sila", also known as Selva del Fallistro, entrusted to the FAI since 2016. It is about 40 kilometers from Cosenza and about 6 kilometers from Camigliatello Silano. The reserve was established in 1987, incorporated into the Sila National Park. The Giants of Sila have a conical, almost columnar appearance. They are the largest trees in Calabria in terms of volume and are often compared to the redwoods of California. But there are some differences between the two trees. The redwoods are taller and can reach 112 meters. It seems incredible that some of these living beings have been here for over 350 years. The numbers are impressive, but it is when we look closely that we realize the immense size of these elderly creatures. We feel awe and wonder as we observe these ancient guardians of the forest for the first time. Walking among these giant plants will make you feel rather small.
